Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was today celebrating the England under-21 selection which adds his name to Molineux’s lengthening international roll call.
“I’m stunned and surprised,” said the Championship’s Golden Boot winner. “It’s absolutely brilliant news.”
Ebanks-Blake has been named alongside team-mate Michael Kightly for the European Championship qualifier with Portugal at Wembley, one of two uncapped players in the squad for the key match a week on Friday.
Although Ebanks-Blake is 22, all players born from 1986 are eligible for the qualification games and, should he feature, the striker will then be available for selection for the finals.
His call-up also continues the official recognition of a Molineux squad now liberally sprinkled with young internationals.
Boss Mick McCarthy’s starting XI on Saturday will most likely contain no fewer than NINE players who can claim international recognition at under-21 or senior level.
“This really is brilliant news,” said Ebanks-Blake. “I wasn’t really aware I was in the frame and it is a surprise – but obviously it is a very nice one.
“The chance of linking up with the squad for a game at Wembley is certainly something to look forward to.
“I’ve not been involved with any of the England teams before.
“I think I was close to turning out for the under-19s but missed out with injury.
“It’s certainly good progression for me, which is what it’s all about as a professional. It’s going to be a great experience.
“There are some top players in that squad and just meeting up and training with them will benefit me.
“It’s also good that Kights is there as well. I’m not really thinking too much about whether I’ll get a chance or not.
“At this stage I’m still new to the squad and it’s still sinking in.
“But I’ll certainly be doing my best when I join up. I’ve not played at Wembley before, so if I do feature at any stage that will just add to the experience.”
