County skipper Ralph banned

Shropshire cricket captain James Ralph has been handed a two-game club suspension for dissent.

Ralph was reported for misconduct towards the umpires in Shifnal’s six wicket Birmingham League premier division victory over Kenilworth Wardens last Saturday.

And, under league rules, that has triggered an automatic two game ban - with no right of appeal.

Ralph, who topped the premier division batting averages last season, will now miss the trips to Himley on Saturday and to reigning champions Walsall a week later.

The news is the latest in a string of crushing blows for Shifnal who are rooted to the bottom of the table, starring at the prospect of relegation - and having to face the last three matches without overseas pro Gary Putland, who returned to Australia earlier this week.

“James has been reported for showing dissent towards the umpires and the rules say that it is a two game ban,” said Shifnal manager Chris Cadman.”It is disappointing and terrible news for us.

“I have spoken to James and he said that it is a fair cop and takes it on the chin.”

Ralph replaced Tim Hancock as Shropshire captain in the early stages of the 2007 season.
