Huge cake planned for Darwin day

Charles DarwinA giant cake with 200 huge candles and a slice on offer for everyone in Shrewsbury will be made to mark the bi-centenary of the birth of Shrewsbury’s most famous son, Charles Darwin, next year.

The cake will be put in the Square on Darwin’s birthday on February 12 and everyone will be invited to have a taste.

But Jon King, spokesman for the Darwin festival, said a fire engine would have to be on stand-by in case anything happened with the massive candles.

He said: “It will be the biggest cake you can have made. No doubt everyone will be invited to have a slice.

“It’s yet to be confirmed who is making it but we will most likely approach the military because they have the biggest kitchens and we will need to have a fire engine on stand-by in case of any incidents.”

He added: “We are not necessarily hoping to break a Guinness World Record but it will be pretty sizable with 200 candles for February 12.”

Up to 156 Shropshire children who share Darwin’s birthday will also be invited to a tea party in the Lion Hotel on the same day.

Mr King said: “We will be inviting as many children as we can for a tea party at the Lion Hotel.”

On the same day, the markers on Darwin walk will also be unveiled, which show the seven key locations in the town.

Mr King said: “February 12, 2009 will be one of the most important days for Shrewsbury in many, many years and we are looking to invite representatives from the world’s media to attend.”

    Sponge or fruit?

Presumably they intend to just throw the ingredients into a mixing bowl and see what it develops into?

(And yes, that IS a joke before any rabid evolutionists decided to lecture all and sundry on Darwinism…)
