Two more accolades for Deepcut death play

A play about the shooting of a young soldier from near the Shropshire border has won a further two awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Deep Cut is based on the death of Cheryl James, 18, from Llangollen, at the Deepcut Army barracks.

Cheryl was one of four soldiers who all died from gunshot wounds at the barracks between 1995 and 2002.

Since her death, her parents Doreen and Des James, now of Llanymynech, have been campaigning for a public inquiry.

The play won a Fringe First award, followed by a Herald Angel, and last week won the Amnesty International 2008 Freedom of Expression Award.

Now Ceiran Macintyre, who plays Mr James, has scooped the Actor of the Festival Award, while Rhian Blyth, who plays an Army colleague, won the Actress of the Festival Award.

Mr James said: “The fact it has won all these awards says an awful lot for the quality of the play itself.”

Deep Cut is on at Theatre Clwyd, Mold, from September 9 to 13.
