Thousands of council workers across Shropshire will be receiving letters this week letting them know if they have a position in the new unitary authority when it comes into being.Just under 200 jobs will disappear when the council launches in April, 2008.
Many of these positions are already vacant but there will be some redundancies.
Today Councillor Peter Nutting, leader of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, said: “During the next few days, all staff across Shropshire will receive notifications of their likely positions in the new organisation.
“Until that happens, it’s hard to know what the effect will be on the staff in the various councils.
“People who did not get a position or the position they want could lose motivation in the future but this is something we have got to manage.
“There are also quite a number of people applying for early retirement or redundancy.
“I think about 180 to 190 job positions will disappear but many of these positions are vacant at the moment and people will not replace them, so the number of redundancies is likely to be minimal,” he added.
Brendon Hills, head of human resources and development at Shropshire County Council, said: “This week staff will be issued with letters advising them on what is likely to happen to their posts in the new Shropshire Council structure.
“Over the next two months we will be consulting with staff to ensure that everyone has certainty by Christmas.
“We anticipate that 182 posts will be lost, which will be overwhelmingly handled by vacancy management and voluntary redundancy.”
