Public toilets may get revamp

Public toilets across Shrewsbury could undergo a £600,000 revamp with new facilities being built in Frankwell - but a 20p charge could be introduced for all users.

Discussions are set to take place between borough and county council bosses over funds for improvements to public toilet provision in a bid to reduce operational costs.

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council officers have recommended tenders are sought for improvements at toilets in the Quarry Park, Raven Meadow, Sydney Avenue, Butcher Row and Abbey Foregate.

In a report to councillors at a cabinet meeting on September 1 recommendations also include a new facility at Frankwell and the closure of the toilets in Hills Lane.

The report recommends: “Pursue discussions with Shropshire County Council to fund improvements to public toilet provision in Shrewsbury of up to £600,000 from SABC capital receipts with a corresponding reduction in operational costs and subsidy to Shrewsbury Town Council.

“To seek tenders for the improvements and operation of the conveniences on a ten year contract based on an output specification. That following improvement a charge of up to 20 pence per visit fixed is levied.”

Councillors will discuss whether to move forward with discussions at the meeting.
