Mourners pay loving tribute to brave Lucy

The horse-drawn hearse for the funeral of Lucy Carr

More than 100 people turned out today for the funeral of brave Shropshire mother Lucy Carr, who died after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. The 27-year-old died on August 14 at her home in Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, after she found out she had breast cancer, which had spread to her liver and bones.

Her funeral took place at Emstrey Crematorium on London Road. Before she died, Lucy bought birthday and wedding presents for her three-year-old daughter Abi to cover the milestone events in her life.

Mourners were asked to wear an item of pink as this was Lucy’s favourite colour and pink also represents the campaign for breast cancer awareness.

Lucy’s coffin, decorated with dolphins, her favourite animal, arrived in a horse-drawn carriage. She was brought into the chapel to DJ Ironic’s Stay With Me.

The Reverend Christopher Sims, from Shrewsbury Abbey, took the service. He said it was celebration for Lucy’s life and the gift of life.

He said: “Obviously there is a theme of pink which is the colour of breast cancer awareness, which Lucy was very outspoken about in her last few weeks and also a colour of celebration.

“It’s not a gift given to many people but Lucy received that gift of knowing how much time left she had and when that was given to her, she made the best of it.”

Rev Sims read a moving tribute from Lucy’s mother Lynda Parry, 49, who praised her daughter’s “beautiful, smiling face”.

It said: “She was such a giving and caring person and I’m so proud to say she was my daughter and a wonderful mother to Abi, who adored her mummy.”

It said if Lucy’s aim to raise awareness about breast cancer helped just one person, it would be worth it, and “even in her darkest hours, she never wanted to stop helping other people and making them aware of lumps”.

Her mother’s tribute said: “I promise I will take care of and protect Abi for you.”

Lucy leaves behind her mother Lynda Parry, 49; daughter Abi, three; sisters Dottie Carr, 29, Sue-Ellen Carr, 24, Amy Carr, 18; nephews Liam Carr, two and Brandon Carr, 11; and niece Deni Carr, 10.
