Shrewsbury Town have agreed a deal with Premier League new boys West Brom to keep goalkeeper Luke Daniels on board until the January transfer window. The 20-year-old custodian has proved a big hit at the Prostar Stadium - and boss Paul Simpson this afternoon tied up a deal to extend his loan, which had been due to expire next Friday.
“I spoke to West Brom and they are happy with the way we’ve been treating Luke and the way the football has been going for him,” said Simpson.
“I’ve been pleased with him and think that he has got better with each game that he’s played for us and hopefully he will improve even more.
“We have him for this weekend’s game with Aldershot but I’ve spoken to Luke and he’s happy to extend the loan through to the January transfer window.
“When you have a young keeper you have to accept that there will be the odd little mistake that you have to be prepared to take, but if you are honest every keeper is a human being and will make a mistake some time.
“I don’t think it matters what an age a keeper is if they are good enough - I think Luke is showing that and it would be nice if he could go on and follow in the footsteps that Joe Hart is taking.”
Daniels’ assured displays between the sticks have led to calls for the player to be signed on a permanent basis - but that has been dismissed by Simpson.
“It’s not on the agenda to keep him,” he added. “West Brom are not entertaining that sort of thought because they think he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”
Meanwhile, Town’s reserves won their first game of the Pontin’s League Central season last night, thrashing Lincoln City 5-2 at Sincil Bank.
Goals from Darren Moss and Michael Symes either side of two for the hosts left the scores level at the break, but Shrewsbury bossed the second half and won it comfortably - Symes adding a second to go with goals for Dave Hibbert and substitute Guy Madjo.
“It was a good win and, as a whole team, they did well,” said Simpson.
“Whenever you go away from home and get five goals you know you’ve done something right.”
