Quarry concerts set to be sell-outs

Fran Healy of travisOrganisers of two open-air concerts in Shrewsbury’s Quarry next month are predicting a sell-out after a surge in ticket sales following the flower show.

Mister Jones Productions, organisers of Indian Summer, a rock and classics spectacular, say tickets are selling rapidly.

The event will be headlined by Travis on September 5, followed by a classical concert starring world-famous tenor Russell Watson on September 6.

Joint organiser Jane Edmunds said: “Tickets for our classical night, starring Russell Watson and opera divas All Angels, are really selling fast now - we’ve seen a surge in sales since the flower show, when we were out and about with flyers.

“People do tend to wait to buy tickets until close to the event date but in this case we would urge them to book now in order to avoid disappointment - this is a massive event for the county featuring a world-class line-up and we fully expect it to sell out.”

The opening night will see Travis perform tracks from the new album Ode to J Smith, to be released this autumn, and will be supported by Brit-award nominees Guillemots.

Tickets at £35 per evening and are available from the website www.misterjonesproductions.com, www.ticketmaster.com, at Shrewsbury Music Hall or on 0871 2715151.

The event is sponsored by the Shropshire Star, Alan Ward Home Furnishers and Beacon Radio.

Is it just me or is The Quarry fast becoming more of a place to hold large events than the town’s main park? Having the flower show and one or two additional events per year was fine, but I feel that having a couple of large events every month in the summer is too much. It’s meant to be a park, not Shrewsbury’s NEC.

And before people start accusing me of being a NIMBY or a “bah humbug” or whatever - I’m not. It’s just I feel that our town’s historic park, which has won in recent years numerous awards for its park function, is being over-used and could well degrade in quality with these intensive events. I would have thought that maybe there are other places in and around the town for the large music/entertainment shows?
