New learning centre set to cost £2.25m

A centre for children with learning disabilities will be built in Telford, costing more than £2.25 million. Details have been unveiled for the Malinslee scheme after the borough council approved it last week.

The building will be on the site of the now demolished Shropshire Lad pub, off Brunel Road.

It is expected to be in operation by July 2009 and will house a child development centre.

The centre has outgrown its base at the Princess Royal Hospital. Its staff include speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and community paediatricians.

Telford & Wrekin Primary Care Trust is working with the council and Malinslee Primary School to develop the centre.

The project also includes the council-managed Sensory Inclusion and Disabled Children Social Care teams.

In future, the complex will house expanded family support and autistic services.

Fran Beck, managing director of community health services, said: “These will be first-rate facilities for children with delayed development, disabilities, hearing and visual impairments.

“Working together under one roof will help improve multi-agency assessments, particularly of children with very complex needs who need a number of specialist assessments.

“We are looking forward to some improvements in all the services through a more environmentally friendly building, better access as the venue is close to the town centre and links with local residents.”
