Warning over bank holiday travel chaos

Shropshire travellers planning a bank holiday getaway have been warned to brace themselves for rail and airport chaos over the weekend.

With the great getaway due to start in the next 48 hours, rail passengers have been told to expect severe disruption on Virgin Trains’ West Coast Mainline services.

Major work is due to start this weekend and trains from the Midlands to London will not be running on the route for the next two weekends while track operator Network Rail carries out work to platforms and a subway at Rugby, in Warwickshire.

A series of planned airport strikes is threatening to disrupt travel for air passengers. Talks aimed at averting a series of 24-hour stoppages were being be held today.

But no major roadworks are planned in Shropshire and works on the A49 between Craven Arms and Ludlow at Onibury Bridge will be suspended to ease traffic congestion.

Motorists trying to get into Bridgnorth are being warned the High Street will be closed between 12pm and 6pm as part of the town’s annual music festival celebrations.

This summer’s wet weather is set to continue over the weekend with rain predicted on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
