Football chief quits town club

The managing director of a Welsh Premier League football club in Mid Wales has quit.

Steve Hughes of Welshpool Town FC dropped the bombshell on fellow directors at a board meeting on Monday, pointing to business reasons for his decision.

Mr Hughes has been the driving force behind the club’s Welsh Premier League progress since promotion from the Cymru Alliance League in 2002.

Vice-chairman Craig Humphreys and general manager Graham Breeze will now take control of the day-to-day running of the club on a temporary basis and the board will meet again next week to discuss future plans.

“I am about to undertake a major change in business direction and feel that the time is right for me to stand aside,” said Mr Hughes.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Welshpool Town Football Club, will continue to back the club in every possible way and hope to return to the fold in the future.

“In the meantime, I am confident the club is in good hands and is set up to be a very competitive Welsh Premier League side this season.”

Mr Hughes is the owner of Steve Hughes Car Sales Ltd at Welshpool and was previously owner of Vauxhall dealerships in Welshpool and Newtown.

He was instrumental in setting up the Vauxhall sponsorship deal for the League of Wales.

Sad to see Big Steve step aside as he has done a lot for the club and really tried his best to put Welshpool on the map. Now I feel is the right time to make further changes, before we get too far into the season, when it would be more difficult to make the changes the club needs to progress. Now is the time for a change of manager, as Tom, who has also done his best seems to find it difficult to motivate the players. Also I think it is a big mistake to bring in Graham Breeze as general manager, as he too is living on past glories from his time as TNS, Keven Kegan he is not
