Blow as access road bid rejected

Developers hoping to build a massive wind farm in Shropshire have been dealt a blow by a neighbouring council over a proposed access road.Newcastle Borough Council’s planning committee has rejected a plan for an access road leading to the proposed seven turbine wind farm at Norton in Hales.

It refused permission for a vehicular access and estate track to the site which is in the administrative area of North Shropshire District Council.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “It was considered last night by the borough council’s planning committee and the road application was refused on grounds of highway safety, impact on character and visual amenity and adverse impact on the landscape.”

North Shropshire District Council’s development control committee will discuss the wind farm application at a meeting on September 2 at the Grove School, Market Drayton, at 7pm.

The council was forced to arrange the meeting at the school, rather than the usual location of its offices in Wem, because of the number of people expected to attend.

More than 1,200 people had their say as part of a consultation launched by the district council on the plans.

North Shropshire’s MP Owen Paterson has previously warned that the lives of young pilots at RAF Shawbury could be at risk if the plans get the go-ahead.

Mr Paterson wrote to Defence Secretary Des Browne calling on him to support objections to the proposed wind farm.

In his letter, Mr Paterson expressed concern about adding “unnecessary extra dangers” to what is already a demanding course at the Shawbury base.
