Gunnell up and running for season

Adrian GunnellShropshire snooker ace Adrian Gunnell is celebrating the perfect start to his new campaign.

Gunnell overcame a shaky opening to defeat Welshman Ian Preece 5-2 in qualifying for the Northern Ireland Trophy at Prestatyn.

He now takes on Dominic Dale in Belfast next Sunday for a place in the last 32 of the first competition of the season.

Gunnell lost the first frame, but was back on level terms at 2-2 at the interval.

A break of 125 took the Telford cueman 3-2 up, and he sealed victory by taking the next two frames with excellent clearances after being well behind in both.

“I can’t remember the last time I felt as tense before the start as I did yesterday,” said Gunnell. “The way I played in the first frame looked like I had never picked a cue up before - it was embarrassing.

“But I settled into it and it was pleasing to get the first win of the season.”
