The former Housemartins star is promoting his new album The Cross-Eyed Rambler, the 14th long player of his career and his first release as a solo artist.

The Independent called it “a ramble across familiar terrain”.

The reviewer added: “In its louder moments, The Cross-Eyed Rambler rocks as vigorously as the Housemartins. It also swings, in a country and western way, just like the Beautiful South.”

The Times critic gave the album four stars.

The critic said: “On his first solo album since disbanding the Beautiful South ‘due to musical similarities’, Heaton’s voice is familiar but the tunes are very different: guitars twang through rockabilly humdingers and country swingalongs.”
