Larry is satisfied at Bucks opening

Larry is satisfied at Bucks openingAFC Telford United’s assistant manager Larry Chambers had mixed emotions after watching the Bucks kick off their season with a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Stalybridge Celtic.

Chambers was the Telford voice in the dugout as boss Rob Smith completed his suspension from the end of last season in the stands.

While few clubs will come away from Bower Fold with a point, Chambers knows it might have been more after United came back from a goal down to lead on the hour.

“To come back from 1-0 down to go 2-1 up, I thought we would have enough about us to see the game out,” admitted Chambers.

“I’m disappointed from that point of view, but before we even arrived we knew that it would be a tough game.

“Stalybridge will be up there come the end of the season, so from that point of view I’m happy with a point - at least we’ve taken something away from it.”

Andy Brown volleyed the Bucks in front and fellow new signing Terry Fearns should have made the points secure minutes later but missed a golden opportunity from eight yards.

Chambers added: “We’ve signed Terry to score goals - he’s had a prolific pre-season and wherever he has been he has scored goals.

“That chance he had at 2-1, if he’d scored I think that would have killed the game.

“Nine times out of ten he puts those chances away, but he didn’t and obviously that had a telling on how the game finished.

“They scored - a bad goal defensively from our point of view from our throw in - and at the death they could have won it.

“But we’re up and running now. We’ve put together a squad that we think can challenge and nothing changes after that performance, I still think we’re good enough to get there.”
