Top judges today upheld the robbery conviction of a Powys man who has fought for nearly 40 years to clear his name.
Three judges sitting in the Court of Appeal in London ruled the conviction of Anthony Stock, of Llandrindod Wells, who was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on July 17, 1970, should stand.
His case is the first to have been referred twice to appeal judges for review by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.
Mr Stock, who was released from custody in October 1975, was convicted of part of an attack by four men on the manager of a Tesco supermarket in the Merrion Centre, Leeds.
He has protested his innocence ever since. But today Mr Stock, who is now in his late 60s, had his conviction upheld by Lord Justice Latham, Mr Justice Forbes and Dame Heather Steel.
Mr Stock was not present in court for the ruling.
He lost his first appeal in February 1971. In November 1993, the case was referred to the Court of Appeal but in July 1996 the court dismissed that second appeal. A third appeal was rejected by judges in August 2004.
