Wolves have increased the length of the Molineux pitch to crank up the pressure on opposition teams and to give them an edge in the promotion stakes.
Manager Mick McCarthy has lengthened the playing area by five yards to 115 yards. The width has stayed at 75 yards.
McCarthy believes the extra space, which was marked out before Saturday’s 4-2 win against Blackburn, will make it more difficult for teams to close down his young, athletic side.
Three years ago, McCarthy’s predecessor Glenn Hoddle widened the pitch by six feet to capture a similar advantage.
“Lengthening the pitch suits us because of the age of our team - we’ve got an athletic team,” said the boss.
“We might find it big when we’re chasing the ball, but we play 4-4-2 with wingers and maybe teams might just find it that bit harder to close us down.
“We want to make the pitch as big as we possibly can to play football on. “
