School vandals go on wrecking rampage

Vandals went on a wrecking spree at a Powys high school, smashing a classroom window, setting a bin on fire and driving a motorbike over the all-weather pitch.Hundreds of pounds damage was caused at Welshpool High School.

Constable Lyndsay Sweetman said the incidents were “serious and concerning”, but warned the culprits they would be found.

She said: “A large window to a classroom at the high school has been smashed and a motorbike damaged the all-weather pitch.

“But the most serious and concerning matter of damage for us is damage to a bin which was set alight to the rear of the school.”

Graham Lewis, chairman of governors at the school said: “I can’t say anything other than it is dreadful news for the school and I will be looking into it as soon as I can, because we will have to put this right.

“The all-weather pitch is a wonderful facility that is used by many people and to have vandals come and churn it all up is just not on.

“I am going to go up to the school to inspect the damage and see what can be done.”

Constable Sweetman said: “We would like to inform members of the public that Welshpool High School is covered by CCTV cameras and anybody found causing damage to the school or its grounds will be found and prosecuted.”

Any information can be reported to Constable Sweetman on 0845 3302000, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Meanwhile, a picnic table was broken and a window smashed at Llanfyllin High School. The damage was discovered on Sunday and Constable Phil Youens of Llanfyllin police has appealed for information on 0845 3302000.
