Shrewsbury Town today continued a frenzied summer of transfer activity by signing goalkeeper Luke Daniels on loan from West Bromwich Albion. The 20-year-old has arrived on an initial 28-day temporary move, with a view to a long-term loan.
A former Manchester United youngster, Daniels arrived at Albion in 2004 and his impressive form for the reserves earned him England recognition at under-18 and 19 level.
Daniels was sent out on a three-month loan spell to Motherwell at the end of last season, making his Scottish Premier League debut against Celtic in May.
His arrival adds intrigue to a congested goalkeeping department which already features Glynn Garner and Scott Bevan, as well as youngster Jasbir Singh.
Meanwhile, manager Paul Simpson has insisted starting shirts for next week’s League Two opener against Macclesfield are still on offer as Shrewsbury prepare to bring their pre-season campaign to a close tomorrow.
Premiership new-boys Stoke are the visitors to the Prostar Stadium and Simpson said: “There are still places up for grabs.
“I’m very close to knowing what my team will be to start the season but it’s not set in stone.
“Stoke are a big, physical side and that’s the type of style we will come up against a lot this season, without the same quality they will bring.
“Tony Pulis teams are always well organised and disciplined so it will be a good challenge for us and I’m sure there will be a good crowd in.”
A squad of 19 will face Stoke - with the remaining six first-team members complementing a youth team in a friendly at Ellesmere Rangers (7.30pm) tonight.
They are Singh, James Meredith, Steve Leslie, Mark Pugh, Michael Symes and Guy Madjo.
Simpson will stage a pre-season question and answer session, organised by the Official Supporters Club, at the Prostar Stadium next Thursday at 7.30pm.
* Former Shrewsbury midfielder Jamie Tolley will make a surprise return to his former club on the opening day of the season.
Tolley looked set to leave Moss Rose earlier in the summer - but has now signed an initial six-month deal with the Silkmen.
