Places battle delights Simpson

sd2816699sh25fball-2.jpgDelighted boss Paul Simpson welcomed the prospect of a selection headache after seeing his side continue their strong pre-season with a 2-0 victory over Blackpool.

Goals from Dave Hibbert and Ben Davies sealed a fine performance from Simpson’s men against the Championship side at the Prostar Stadium last night.

And the Town chief admits he is happy with progress as he builds for the start of the League Two season, at home to Macclesfield on August 9.

“I’m pleased with everything,” he declared.

“I’m pleased with the football, pleased with the result, pleased with the little bits of combination play we’re getting.

“We’ve played some good football, but let’s hope we don’t peak too early.

“There’s a lot of competition for places. There’s 24 players all fighting for a starting place, or at least a place in the 16.

“Hopefully they will all be fit and there’s eight players who are going to be left out for the Macclesfield game, which will give me a headache.

“There’ll be eight players who will be disappointed and it’s a test for them, then, to see how determined they are to push to get back into the squad.”

Simpson also had four members of his squad - Michael Symes, Steve Leslie, Guy Madjo and James Meredith - playing in a youth friendly at Morda United.

And he was delighted to receive reports that Leslie and Madjo had both been on target in a 5-1 victory for Town.

“It wasn’t a punishment for them to have to go and play over there,” he added.

“It was a chance for them to get a game because I thought they needed 90 minutes and they’ve got that.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Scott Bevan looks on target to feature in Monday’s Shropshire Senior Cup semi-final with Market Drayton, having missed all three friendlies so far with a niggling injury.

“He’s coming along okay,” said Simpson. “He trained yesterday, he’s training today and he should, hopefully, take some part in the game on Monday night as well.

“It’s a good situation to be in when we’ve got everyone available.”
