A former Shropshire woman who became headline news around the world when she was kidnapped in Chechnya is returning to her home county to give a talk in Church Stretton.
Camilla Carr, 50, will be at the Longmynd Hotel on Sunday to help raise funds for Chechnyan youngsters who still bear the scars of war.
Today Ms Carr, who now lives in Devon, said she was looking forward to returning to Shropshire because she had grown up in the county and also taught at Wrekin College.
She said: “I grew up in Wellington and went to school in Shrewsbury, as well as learning about the expressive arts in Church Stretton. I’m really looking forward to coming back to Shropshire.”
Ms Carr’s story of kidnap was screened around the world when she was seized, along with her partner, Jon James, by Chechnyan rebels in 1997.
She was held captive for 443 days, during which time she was beaten, raped and subjected to psychological torment. Ms Carr has recalled her experiences in a book, The Sky Is Always There, and she will talk about that on Sunday.
Today talk co-ordinator Ros Ephraim, of Church Stretton-based Burway Books, said tickets for the event were available, priced £3.50.
Ms Carr and Mr James were eventually released following the intervention of Russian billionaire Boris Berezovsky.
