Supermarkets launched a petrol price war today, with three of Britain’s biggest chains cutting the cost of unleaded and diesel by up to 5p a litre at pumps in Shropshire and Mid Wales.
Supermarket chain Asda announced it would cut the cost of unleaded and diesel by 3p a litre, and Morrisons swiftly followed suit by cutting its unleaded and diesel by 4p a litre.
And Sainsbury’s said it was also cutting petrol prices.
However, the Sainsbury’s announcement that it was cutting petrol by 5p a litre from Thursday only applied to customers who spent £50 or more in stores in a two-week promotion.
Asda and Morrisons said they were responding to the recent drop in the price of oil. The price of a barrel of oil dropped from a peak of 147 US dollars to 130 US dollars in recent weeks.
A Tesco spokesman said today the supermarket giant was not entering the petrol price war at this stage.
David Miles, Asda trading director, said: “We are seeing a more stable reduction in oil prices, allowing us to pass on the savings to customers.
“We urge other retailers to follow our lead at a time when customers need as much help as possible.”
And across Shropshire drivers were already seeing the benefits at the pumps with prices falling in some areas yesterday afternoon.
At Morrisons in Wellington, there were queues from about 4.30pm yesterday after prices dropped to 112.9p a litre for unleaded and 125.9p a litre for diesel.
Mike Woodyet, assistant manager, said there were queues last night and he expected trade to pick up.
Sarah Davies, petrol sales assistant at Asda Donnington Wood, where unleaded petrol is 113.9p a litre and diesel 128.9p a litre, said it was busier than normal for the school holidays.
Nick Briggs, store manager at Asda, Old Potts Way, Shrewsbury, said: “It’s a little bit busier than normal, but I don’t think a lot of people have realised it yet.
“I expect it to be pretty brisk when people realise later today it has come down by 4p per litre for unleaded. We are expecting a busy day.”

Sainsbury’s cutting 5p off petrol for two weeks only and you have to spend £50. It won’t tempt me to shop there with that con!
3p doesn’t really justify the headline, Supermarkets reduce Petrol price’s slightly, may have been more accurate.
I live 20miles from the nearest asda or tesco so have to shop at sainsburys, but my local doesn’t have a petrol satation so i would have to travel 20 miles to take advantage of the 5p off voucher.
about time too, in clunton where I live there are no buses, and no cycle lanes, yet I am supposed to pay £1.46 a Litre for deisel, with about 50p of that going to the government in tax + another 20 p in V.A.T., i wouldnt mind if I were unemployed, transexual or an immigrant, so that I actually got something back from this moeny, but as a normal white man in england I just get taxed and never see any benefits
So when the supermarkets have priced all the other “garages” out of business, what then?
Be VERY careful what you wish for!
This just proves that much of the recent oil price rise is down to greedy speculators rather than an genuine shortage of supply. Perhaps the eco-warriows will be a bit less gleeful now?
Magic J,
Do you have many transexuals or immigrants living in Clunton claiming loads in benefits? Or were your comments just prejudice?
stans superstore is doin the same as sainsburys! why spend £50 for cheaper fuel, when you can go to asda and get cheaper fuel anyway?? lol
Its good to see everyone have with the prices coming down !! What will make everyone smile ?
Majic J, please enlighten me… what benifits does an immigrant get that you dont?? You just take yourself to the countries that these people come from and u’ll soon see the benifits you get here and take for granted.
Circumstances have dictated that what once was a weekend toy is now my daily driver.
Any reduction in fuel costs is good news when your car averages 18mpg! But she’s a Jaguar, and she’s worth it bless her.
Magic J you should stop reading the mail!
Magic J is 100% correct in his views
Y Mab Darogan - 100% correct? Based upon which facts precisely?
100% prejudiced more like!
I challenge you to give me one accurate, verified example where an immigrant or transexual is entitled to more benefits than a white male - especially in Clunton, which is, after all, officially, one of the quietest places under the sun!
wait till it goes up
great news atlast
great news atleast, it shows gordon browns international efforts are working, to increase supply and reduce demand and help keep britan driving
every thing in the garden is rosy down here, my village little petrol station has green petrol at £1.13, why go and spend £50 at tesco’s to get 5p off.
with oil prices dropping and banks and building socs. finding it cheaper to borrow money, and mortgages just beginning to become a little more available, i spy green shoots of recovery, but don’t tell a soul! thanks gordon brown for possibly guiding us through another usa grown mess. over to you mr peasebody!!
#7 Peter:
How ill-informed you are! Did you not know that all residents of Clunton are unemployed transsexual immigrants.
It must make poor ‘Magic J’ very anxious about his situation ;~)
We shop at Tescos have done for many years currently they have buy £50 of goods and get 5p off a litre of fuel token but if you spend £150 you still only get one token you only get one per transaction! so if you want one token per £50 you would have to go around three times to benefit from a £150 shop! we are looking at shopping somewhere else.
well done to gordon brown i say - i knew he’d get it sorted evenutally, economic genius,
