School to close for the last time

Pupils and staff were preparing to leave a Shropshire primary school for the final time today.

Childs Ercall Primary School was closing today after 150 years educating children from the village.

It is shutting after Shropshire County Council, the local education authority, said that, with fewer than 20 pupils, it could not operate economically. Pupils are set to transfer to Hinstock or Tibberton primary schools.

The closure was today due to be marked with a service at St Michael’s Church in the village and the burying of a time capsule containing school artefacts in the churchyard.

Susan Bosher, who has two sons at the school, described the closure as “horrible.”

“It’s like a bereavement,” she said. “The teachers are friends, it’s just so sad. It’s horrible.”

Heather Lane, headteacher, said she was sad to be leaving the school.
