TNS hoping to break Euro duck

The New Saints flew out for their latest European mission in confident mood as they look to avoid the prospect of again being grounded at the first hurdle.Last season’s Welsh Premier runners-up made the trek to Lithuanian A League outfit FK Suduva only too aware of their previous failed attempts on the European stage.

But they left Stansted Airport with a genuine belief they can buck the trend in tomorrow evening’s UEFA Cup first round qualifying clash at Suduva’s new 4,200-capacity Naujajame stadium.

Last season, under previous boss Ken McKenna, the Saints made history by winning their first game in Europe after a decade of trying when defeating Latvian side Ventspils in the Champions League at Newtown.

However, that delight was shortlived as they bowed out when losing in the return leg in Latvia.

They again travel into the unknown to the industrial town of Marijampole, but the club’s new management team of Andy Cale and Mike Davies believe the club have what it takes to progress.

“There are no easy games in Europe but we’re optimistic about the draw and can go over there full of confidence,” said coach Davies. “It’s one of the best draws we could have had in terms of getting through and we’re all very excited. We’ve been training hard and are very well prepared.

“The players came back very fit for pre-season, so we got straight into a lot of technical work.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge, and we believe we can do well. There’s a little buzz about the place at the moment. We’re feeling quite confident and the experience the lads have of playing in Europe will put them in good stead.”

As well as fielding several seasoned European campaigners, the border club also include youngsters John McKenna, Craig Whitfield, Ryan Marriott and Rob Williams in the squad, along with Bosnian Nicola Andelic.

Veteran keeper Lee Williams is added as cover for first-choice Paul Harrison.

The only injury worry is front runner Alfie Carter who is unlikely to figure in the first leg through injury but should be fit for the return leg at Newtown in two weeks’ time.

Suduva, runners-up in the Lithuanina A League last term, have the advantage of being in mid-season, but two years ago they were made to battle before narrowly defeating Rhyl 2-1 following a goalless draw at Belle Vue.
