McKenna dreams of Uefa Cup start

The New Saints flew out on their European mission to Lithuania today with several of their young guns looking to impress.John McKenna, striker Craig Whitfield and defender Rob Williams were among those named in the 20-man squad heading for Suduva for the Uefa Cup preliminary round first leg tie.

It’s a real dream for McKenna, no relation to former boss Ken, who is hoping to make his mark as the Saints flew out from Stansted Airport .

The talented young central midfielder was a member of the TNS Scholarship Programme and, after trials with Ipswich and Preston North End, signed pro forms for the Saints this summer.

He is now looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere as the club meets FK Suduva in the first leg of their Uefa Cup qualifier on Thursday night.

“It’s a bit of a shock to have a chance to play in the Uefa Cup,” said the 18-year-old.

“I didn’t think it would happen so soon and I’m really excited about it.

“Now I want to get out there and have a taste of what’s going on.

“I’d like to think I can challenge for a first team place and want us to get through in Europe and then hopefully do as well in all the domestic action.”

McKenna is full of praise for management duo Andy Cale and Mike Davies.

“There’s a little buzz about the place at the moment, I think we can do it this season.

“It’s a dream - and I’m really excited about it.”
