Pitch swop to keep top football

Welsh Premier league football looks set to be secured in a Mid Wales town, after council officials recommended a ground switch between two clubs.Welshpool Town FC looked set to be expelled from the Welsh Premier as they were unable to meet ground criteria set down for league participation for the 2010/11 season at their current council-owned Maesydre home, which is open on one side due to a cricket pitch.

But members of Welshpool Town Council’s recreation committee yesterday voted in favour of a ground swop between the club and the town’s Waterloo Rovers team, who play nearby in the lower-level Spar Mid Wales league.

The proposal will now go to the full town council later this month for approval. Should this be granted, Welshpool Town would need to compensate Waterloo Rovers for any costs involved in the move.

Welshpool Town chairman Steve Hughes said it marked one of the most exciting times in the club’s history.

“We are also very grateful for the thoughtful consideration given by both Waterloo Rovers and Welshpool Rugby Club,” he said.

He added: “No-one, including Welshpool Town, really wants this, but to continue in the Welsh Premier League we have to meet all the ground criteria and that is not possible on our current pitch.

“We are proud to be putting Welshpool on the map.”

“If the full council gives its blessing to this recommendation, we face the most exciting period in the history of Welshpool Town Football Club.
