Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray will be out for three to four weeks after suffering a reaction to his cruciate knee ligament injury.The 27-year-old requires injections in his knee to help his recovery process after his knee became inflamed.
Fellow keeper Wayne Hennessey will also miss Saturday’s opening pre-season friendly at Wrexham after suffering a minor ankle injury in training, leaving third choice Carl Ikeme to make a rare first team start.
“Matt’s got to have a couple of injections in his knee,” said boss Mick McCarthy.
“He’s been doing his rehab and his agility work, bouncing on his knees - as you do as a goalkeeper - and he’s just got a reaction.
“He went to see somebody yesterday and it’s no surprise because his rehab has been absolutely perfect so far. But when you have a cruciate it’s unusual to come back playing without having had some setback, but that’s all it is.
“He’s just got a bit of inflammation and we’ll get it injected and he’ll probably be out for three or four weeks.
McCarthy insists there is no time limit on Murray being fit for the start of the season after a year out.
“We’ll see. It’s all about when he’s ready,” added the boss. “I can’t judge when that’s going to be. I never expected him back before the start of the season.
“The reality is it’s all about the fitness because when he gets back to that stage and handling a ball it will be the first time he’s done anything in anger in 12 months.”
“Matt’s done so well and done everything perfectly - from laying in bed and not being allowed to get out, to being on crutches and then putting his foot down for a certain amount of time.
“He followed it all to the letter and so it will be as long as it takes.”
Hennessey has been withdrawn as a precaution.
