Davies keeps Town armband

Ben DaviesMidfielder Ben Davies has been give the nod to remain as Shrewsbury Town’s captain - for the time being at least.Manager Paul Simpson has confirmed that Davies will retain the skipper’s armband for the early stages of pre-season at least.

The 26-year-old was awarded the captaincy last January following the departure of Stewart Drummond to Morecambe.

The arrival of Paul Murray, Michael Jackson and Shane Sherriff - all of whom have previous captaincy experience - prompted suggestions a change in skipper could be in the offing.

And, while Simpson is not ruling that out, he is sticking with Davies as his on-the-pitch leader for now.

“I’m going to assess it over pre-season but Ben Davies was club captain last season and he will remain as club captain until I make a decision,” said the Town boss.

“As it stands at the moment, nobody is guaranteed to start the season and I want to see how everyone reacts to the changes that are going on.

“In my mind the club captain position doesn’t need to be decided until the start of the season and I may try people in that roll and see how they respond to it and take on the armband.”

Meanwhile, Simpson has given away few clues in distributing squad numbers - with all of last season’s squad retaining the same numbers.

Record signing Grant Holt will wear No 16, while fellow striking new boy Richard Walker has been given No 25.
