More than 60 jobs will be created in Market Drayton after plans to build a £3.6 million nursing home in the town won approval from the district council.
The development in Shrewsbury Road will mean demolishing a two-storey building and bungalow on the site to make way for the 60-bed home.
The scheme to provide much needed residential nursing care in north Shropshire was given the go-ahead by members of North Shropshire District Council’s development control committee yesterday.
It will be run by applicants Dr Mark Cowling and his wife Lynn, who already own and run the Rylands Nursing Home, in Newport, which was given a rating of “excellent” in a report by social care inspectors last October.
A previous application for the development was turned down by the council in November, after planning chiefs said it would have an “overbearing impact” on nearby homes, but the committee had been urged to support the new proposals. At the meeting in Wem yesterday, Mrs Cowling said: “It will visually enhance this part of Shrewsbury Road. We believe there will be many benefits for Market Drayton and more than 64 full and part-time jobs will be generated.
“There is an identified need for a quality nursing home in Market Drayton, local care is important so families can still be part of their relatives lives.
“We would hope to become an important part of the community in Market Drayton.”
The proposals had already been backed by Market Drayton Town Council and enjoyed a similar response from district councillors.
Members agreed to support the plans, but added a condition that access to the home would be assessed.
