Buoyant Bucks back on track

Jamie Vermiglio is all smiles as he points to his new midfield partner Liam Blakeman during Saturday morning’s first pre-season training session. Photos by Andy Cunningham.A blazing hot morning at the end of June. It can only mean one thing at AFC Telford United - the start of pre-season training.

At a time of year when most fans are still digging out their suitcases and preparing for their summer holidays, the Bucks have already begun the hard work of preparing for the new campaign.

Oakengates Leisure Centre was the venue as assistant manager Larry Chambers put his squad through their paces with a tough first running session on the athletics track.

The hard work continues tonight with a further spotlight on fitness training at Wrekin College.

And that will set them up for the real killer - some gruelling runs up the Wrekin on Thursday and Saturday.

The players will return to the New Bucks Head on Saturday for the club’s open day, and that will also give them the first opportunity to actually get to grips with a ball once again.

That will start the countdown to the first friendly, away at Stratford, on Saturday, July 12.

“The new lads - Terry Fearns, Gavin Cowan, Andy Brown and Liam Blakeman - all looked in great shape,” said Chambers.

“Andy Brown looked particularly fit. He’s a student at Loughborough (which specialises in sports courses) so we’d have expected that.”
