The Environment Agency is using the anniversary of last year’s widespread floods to warn Shropshire homeowners they need to do more to protect themselves.
The EA says it has been working tirelessly after the unprecedented rainfall of last summer to minimise risks, but is urging the public to do the same.
The announcement comes after a Government report claimed Britain was under-prepared for such incidents.
EA officers have been working with communities advising people how to prepare for flooding.
Throughout the region, 1,833 people attended the 32 flood surgeries held in the weeks after the floods and were encouraged to sign up to receive the EA flood warning service.
But the agency claims people in Shropshire are not doing enough to help themselves prepare for flooding.
Flood risk manager Anthony Perry said: “We need people to work with us to reduce the risks by joining our flood warning service.”
An EA spokesman added: “Only 28 per cent of people at risk of flooding in the region have signed up for Flood Warnings Direct.”
