Shropshire will host one of Britain’s top military historians as he rides on horseback across the county in a bid to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund.
Professor Richard Holmes, renowned for his television programme War Walks, author of numerous books, and for many years a member of the Department of War Studies at Sandhurst, will follow in the footsteps of King Henry VII in the Henry Tudor Ride.
The journey retraces the route that Henry Tudor took before defeating King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth of 1485.
The battle brought an end to the long running Wars of the Roses. The riders will be wearing period costumes as they set off on July 13 from Dale, near Milford Haven, on horseback. They will then continue to ride through Cardigan and Welshpool, arriving in Shrewsbury on July 16 before going on to Cannock Chase and arriving at Bosworth in Leicestershire on July 19.
Professor Holmes hopes to raise more than £50,000 for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) through sponsorship.
He said: “This is a significant historical ride and I’m thrilled to be taking part, with the aim of raising money for a significant charity.
“The ABF needs to raise over £5.5 million every year and has been supporting soldiers, veterans and their families for over 60 years and continues to do so. All money raised from the event will go towards the ABF’s Current Operations Fund, supporting soldiers or their families in need as a result of current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
Professor Holmes will be accompanied by Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter, the head of the charity. Details can be found at www.armybenfund.org or on 0845 241 4826. To sponsor a rider visit www.justgiving.com/henrytudorride
