Special goodie bags created from old copies of the Shropshire Star were being handed out today at an event to encourage people to recycle.

The Making the World of Difference conference, which began at Shire Hall in Shrewsbury this morning, was due to be attended by nearly 100 Shropshire junior school children.

Twelve primary schools were due to attend, with youngsters from student councils at seven of them presenting initiatives they have drawn up to make the world a fairer, healthier and more sustainable place to live.

The Shropshire Star bags – which feature fairtrade products, seeds and other goodies – have been created by volunteers and were due to be handed out to each of the children.

They were created to show the youngsters one of the initiatives they could take-up to help the environment.

The schools presenting at the conference have taken part in a G8 Challenge project by event organiser Bridges, a Wellington-based development educational charity which promotes awareness and understanding of diverse cultures and global issues.

Following on from a mock G8 summit, each school council voted to decide what they thought is the most important global issue and decided how to take positive action locally.

Some of the initiatives youngsters, aged seven to 11, have undertaken include choosing to buy mosquito nets to send to malaria-ridden parts of the world, holding Fairtrade events within school and working to improve energy efficiency in the local community.

After a year of action, the pupils involved are now ready to share their experiences and give tips to other schools wanting to follow their lead.
