Ministry of Defence officials are investigating after an army corporal reported seeing a UFO in the skies over Shropshire.Corporal Mark Proctor was on night patrol with two colleagues at Tern Hill Barracks, near Market Drayton, when he claimed he saw 13 cube-shaped “craft” in the sky, zig-zagging from side-to-side.
Corporal Proctor, from the First Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment, said the lights, which were bright red, passed over the barracks very high, but not at a great speed.
Ministry of Defence spokeswoman Belinda Steele said MoD staff were investigating the incident purely to check there was no threat to the barracks.
She said: “The MoD examines reports solely to establish whether UK airspace may have been compromised by hostile or unauthorised military activity.
“If required, sighting reports are examined with the assistance of the Department’s air defence experts. Unless there is evidence of a potential threat, there is no attempt to identify the nature of each sighting reported. “
No one from the Royal Irish Regiment was available to comment.
A similar sight over south Shropshire was also reported early today. Martin Curtis, of Dorrington, near Shrewsbury, says he spotted a huge bright light with a couple of smaller ones hovering over Caer Caradoc, Church Stretton, between 1am and 2am.
He said: “It stayed hovering in the sky for about an hour.”
A national newspaper also reported that two hours after the Tern Hill sighting, a Shropshire couple claimed to have “been followed” by strange lights along the A5 near Shrewsbury.
There were also reports a huge unidentified object rising from the ground towards a police helicopter in Cardiff at 12.40am on Sunday June 8 and photographs of alleged UFOs taken by a woman in Bromsgrove on Friday June 20.

In addition to the UFO sightings, on Saturday June 7th at approx 11pm in Shifnal, I saw 2 orange lights flying overhead. I called my husband who fetched a pair of binoculars. Whilst concentrating on these objects I looked behind us to see a stream of about 12 more of these objects.
On closer inspection through the binoculars, we both saw what we agreed, resembled orange fan shaped lights in a an inverted translucent cube shaped objects.
They were flying silently going in a East, South Easterly direction.
Again.. it sounds like these chinese lanterns.
A new craze to hit the uk.. They usually get released into the sky at weddings or other outside functions.. They have a spooky, eery appearance once they are in flight…They glow fiery red or orange and when the wind gets a hold of them they dance around.
People who fly them often comment on how much they resemble UFO’s.
Soon everyone will have caught on and be able to finally recognize thats what these cluster’s of lights are.
But nonetheless.. There are other things out there that cant be identified.
Put it like this.. We can’t be the only ones in a universe this big, doesn’t matter what god theories are braught into this, theres more than one living planet!.. Aliens could be living with us, how would we know?.. I think we’ll see more and more sightings, they seem more advanced than us, but their empires probably aren’t government funded, thus they have unlimited resources..
I saw the lights too, and they were actually spinning. Def not Ufo Balloons/Chinese lanterns. No way. They were actally spinning cubes of light. I saw them about 1am when I was on the a5 travelling away from shrewsbury. I got out of my car, as did others to look at this. You could clearly see them spinning over and over.
sounds like a load of rubbish to me im sure there is a sensible explanation especially because of the massive MOD presence in shropshire i have no doubt they are terrestrial in origin

Again.. it sounds like these chinese lanterns.”
On June 7th at 11.45pm we saw more than two dozen bright orange UFOs very close to us. They were travelling very fast, low to the ground, heading due south - completely silently. The night was clear, no wind, not even a rustle in the trees. They were most definitely NOT chinese lanterns. Having seen something like this for myself I realise how frustrating it has been for those who have seen such things to have it dismissed as anything from chinese lanterns to too much drink.
I say again, they were most definitely a craft of some sort, under intelligent control. The ones we saw were about the size of a bus.
I do understand your scepticism but we are not all fools when something unusual occurs most people are intelligent enough to know the difference between a lantern blown on the wind and a craft moving at a few hundred miles an hour.
Last year, strange orange lights caused a similar reaction over Bournemouth one night and were seen by numerous people. Some oriental students celebrating an event admitted to sending them up. Evidently they are easily home-made as any upside down paper container will rise into the air if the air is heated by a supported candle.
after 2 bottles of Merlot on the same evening, someone placed a replica tv in my front room - spooky!
call in mulder and skully i say
Another reason why we must not use supermarket carrier bags.
Oh how odd it is that aliens choose to fly over MOD bases. Hmmmm…
Mr Peasbody - Brilliant post!
See my comments below from earlier this year!

Feb 19th, 2008 at 12:32 pm Did anybody see a bright light over oakengates at 18.00 on sunday 17th?
The light was like a helicopter search light and was still for about 15 seconds then slowly moved across the sky and went a orange colour with a small path of smoke behind it, It then went very small to a red dot almost and was gone !
It may of been a flare but it was not a firework as it was in the sky for at least 40 seconds!
To all those skeptics out there trying to explain this phenomena as Chinese lanters, satellites, the International Space station, balloons, swamp gas whatever. Get used to this phenomena because it will increase to the point that the MOD will no longer be able to conceal the truth about an extraterrestrial presence, and their FULL knowledge about this issue.
Come on people wake up, stop watching so much TV and start talking to each other, about the state of our planet, the ongoing wars, our fossil fuel addiction, etc…you think we will be able to sustain this way of living much longer with energy bills soaring and the environment in such a state. Perhaps these being are here to try to wake us up spiritually and not just to “show up”…Do you expect a highly advanced civilisation to land on the white house lawn and say howdy, check out my super advanced gadgets!!
We are way too violent and afraid for something like that to happen.
However you can change this if you want! You just have to start thinking outside the box…
I spotted something strange whilst enjoying an evening out with some friends in our camper van. Whilst it appeared that what we saw was genuine, it transpired that the curator of the local museum was behind it for some nefarious purpose. He would have gotten away with it, too, if not for us meddling in a pesky way!
Very strange they were flying over a military base.
Maybe investigating our defences before a full invasion is planned.
After all we have finite resources
Water, metals, food, which could all be required by a alien race.
Imagine if oil was found on the moon and the moon was inhabited by a primitive race (as we humans must look to advanced aliens who may be able to travel from galaxy to galaxy)
Would the presence of a primitive alien race on the moon deter the people in charge on earth from sourcing the moon if oil was found?
I doubt it very much.
Therefore if said aliens are trying to find resources and we are full of them on earth - what would stop the more advanced aliens from invading?
Going a bit over the top
but you never know.
Of course if any invasion was to happen
how would we cope
Not very well
Considering the farce of the flooding last year
and the panic buying of petrol this year
No doubt the roads would be crammed pack full of people panicking and trying to leave for who knows here
Yeah I saw a Yeti last week!
bright orange lights over essex east london sunday morning, really weird couldnt explain it
early test stage of the tvs29 also known as xgravity, made by the military.
My husband woke up at 1 am last night and saw this massive light/object in the sky. Looking south from Dorrington over the Stretton Hills, he saw a massive glowing object quite high in the sky. It was a fairly cloudy night but this object was intensely bright and he says the largest thing he has ever seen in the sky apart from the moon. It remained in the same position in the sky for over an hour and moved from side to side, with several smaller lights above it. If it had been anything celestial it would have changed position in the sky over time. No ideas or explanations but chinese latern it was not.
If aliens are indeed watching us they must be terified! They are obviously ahead of us in many ways- we don’t have 13 or more spaceships circling another planet observing !
They must be afraid of what they see?
I also worry that if they are ‘hovering’ over our MOD bases what kind of security have we got???
I agree with Phil. What is here for Aliens? I’ll tell you what they will find in my own phrase “Parasites Ruining Paradise”
So heres a message for the hairless grey guys with big black eyes and slits for nostrils (allegedly wot they look like)
Firstly don’t worry if you want to take over the UK.. We have a spineless government that cant even control kids with knives and guns, so don’t worry about your so called ray guns we don’t stand a chance either way.
Our army is fighting other so called aliens in various parts of the world using weapons that wont work on a beach that has something as sinister as sand on it ??? and…..
1. We have a Prime Minister by proxy who no-one voted for, who probably doesn’t know alien from Anglian unless prompted, so please choose what you invade as marked with an ‘X’.
2. A government that has done that many U-turns they don’t know which direction your coming from North Star or from YOUR star.
3. Billion pound profiteering companies ripping off the citizens who rely on their goods or services so we’ll either grind to a halt or freeze to death before you land !
4. We have however “Brave Sir Knights” Rich people who can not only buy a Knighthood, but also ones who have been awarded them, such as those caught with drugs (Sir McCartKNEE) and those who starve and murder to keep power (Sir ROBBING MugaBEE). So dont expect our gallant knights to put up a defence of the realm!
5. Public confessions on TV and tape from MP’s who have admitted taking drugs whilst at UNI.
I say ‘UNI’ because thats the Monopoly version of stay out of jail free card in their eyes and they can therefore get away with keeping their ‘important jobs’ making laws that convict others that do as they did. However MP’s who mysteriously escaped conviction even though the evidence in openly ‘taped’ statements are admissible in court. I’ve watched parliament on TV and yep.. they all sound and make decisions like they are still on the stuff.
6. There will be less invasion defence funds available, due to MP’s claiming £40 per day food allowance when there are masses of people have to live on that a WEEK. You could help us here by beaming all these idiots up North where its cheaper to live and so there fingers in public money would cost us less.
7. Pop idols (Amy Wineface) and models (Fake Moss) who take drugs openly and are role models for all impressionable children and yet recording/modelling companies still keep them on. You could possibly help us on that one. Profits from record sales and cosmetics are more important than our kids lives. So save the kids cos our laws and moral standards can’t.
8. The UK is wide open for invasion at present because OUR BRAVE LADS and LASSES are fighting another Vietnam FOR your friends the Americans ( we saw close encounters ) No-one past or present has or will ever win in Afganistan, so if you can death ray the entire afghan countryside it will make it easier for the yanks to put a McDonalds there too.
9. Please help the US in Iraq too, The quicker they get a puppet president in place for consessions on oil the quicker our lads and lasses can stop dying for fat yanks to drive six litre cars.
Hold it there !! Just had an after-thought !! Scrap the invasion of Earth you Alien fiends… I’ve completely missed out on our biggest defence of all… The COUNCILS !!
Light speed to Altar4 cos you don’t stand a chance, leave your spaceship door open 2 inches on bin day and they will fine you £250.00, Land in a space not designated and they’ll fine you upwards of £60.00, Clamp your landing gear and if you don’t display a tax disk you will be on Earth forever because they’ll tow away your ship and crush it.
Don’t pay any further fines and you’ll be banged up in a hotel and get better looked after than the pensioners who’s taxes paid for the hotel to be built in the first place.
And don’t think we don’t know your coming either, the BBC rhymes with KGB and they do more investigations as a ’simple broadcasting company’ than our own MI5??
And finally to the people who will gripe at my comments, some may laugh, some may think I have valid points. But don’t live a mundane life because if aliens did want to take over the earth, what WILL you do about it… frighten them with a rolled up HEAT magazine !
This is Sir James Berry over and out.
(PS. My own Knighthood is on hire purchase)
Just been onto Google and many people has said they are defineatly Chinese Lanterns. They go up to a mile high and float and spin through the air. How embarrassing for the soldiers who reported them! The lanterns are used for lots of events, Parties, weddings etc. We shall be having them at my daughters wedding on July 12th so be prepared for sightings of UFO’s over Bayston Hill!
Recently saw two chinook helicopters chasing an unlit black triangular craft back & forward up the Thames Valley about 11pm. Not the first time I’ve seen this craft which is about the size of a double hang-glider. My theory, for what its worth is that, together with some of the crop circles and other weird stuff, is that is all military training of some sort but I’d love to be proved wrong.
just checkin’ ya out before we come and eat ya
I myself when returning home from worcester on march 28, 2008, spotted a dark grey ufo which we viewed from the car for at least 10mins.this ufo whilst flying straight, suddenly stopped&shot straight upwards, then reappeared flying in all sorts of ways until dissapearing in2 thin air.
Lots of people like to laugh at UFO stories and say people are mad for believing in them or that people who have seen UFO’s must be nutters!!!
But I ask one question!!!
What is more crazy - To believe that there are other intelligent lifeforms in our universe?
or
to believe in and fight wars in the name of religion?
In the early hours of 7th Jun I was returning home after an enjoyable afternoon and evening spent in a number of licenced premises in Shrewsbury town centre. Just as I passed under the Shrewsbury railway bridge at the intersection of Castle Street and Smithfield, I started to see rapidly spinning orange and white lights above and around me. This continued on for about 4 or 5 minutes, when I eventually lost consciousness.
I awoke several hours later in a neighbours garden, with ectoplasm all down my front. I was unable to account for my whereabouts during those hours to my wife, nor to the police who later charged me with being drunk and disorderly, and a number of other minor public order offences.
I, more than most, await with interest the findings of the MoD’s inquiry.
It is all basically a load of rubbish. There is no such thing a UFOs they always have a logical explanation. Equally there is no such thing as ghosts etc. Everything has a logical and rational explanation.
Re. No.27 ‘Phil’
I certainly believe that anyone who doesn’t believe there’s intelligent life ‘out there’, must be very complacent or small-minded indeed. However, how can anyone believe that religion starts wars when great religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism etc. have always denounced killing as being a great sin. Do any of us remember the simple commandments “Thou shalt not kill” and “Love your neighbor as yourself”? The truth is that it is man who distorts religion to serve his own purposes for power and greed. Can you honestly say that our involvement in the war with Iraq and Afghanistan is caused by religion? I think not.
Denis I presume you only believe in things you can see?
In that case I have ask, do you believe in wind?
As that is something which you cannot see either.
Its a bit presumptious of yourself to state that there is no life on any other planet in the universe.
I presume that the billions NASA ploughs into research in this area is all wasted. They should have just asked you instead.
had another 2 bottles last night - same thing happened. Wake up eveyone this is real, ps buy one get one free in sainsburys!
Zool, got a couple of gals in my office who look real tasty!
MG - Well Religion was created by man - So man uses it in whatever form they require
As for religion not causing wars.
How about the Crusades - fought in the name of religion - Christianality vs Islam
The Spanish Inquistion again carried out in the name of religion.
Persucution of the Jews all the way in history from the Roman period to today - all because of religion.
Even the so called terrorists today cite religion as reason for carrying out acts of terror.
Ireland - catholics / Orange men.
I could go on and on and on
I gather you understand my point (I hope)
phil, are you for real
Again i say they were NOT lanterns- I saw them with my own eyes. these things were absolutely huge and flashing all different colours. I beg the other observers standing on the A5 with me to come forward.
Phil
Get real and read properly what I said. Yes there may be life on other planets but the chance of it reaching earth is pretty remote.
As for wind thats exactly what you are talking ” a load of hot air”.
Get real or go and talk to the little green men at the bottom of your garden.
No Phil..I still claim that religion doesn’t cause wars. MAN causes wars. OK..let me approach this from a scientific standpoint. War comes naturally to people. It existed long before any religion. Peace did not. Peace is not natural to the human condition. It had to be taught and learned. And it was a religious idea. True, religion has been used by some as a pretext for war. But this does not invalidate all religion, just as when football players brawl it does not invalidate the game of football. Ridding the world of all religion would not end war any more than abolishing football would brawls. In fact, religion still provides the strongest argument for peace between people. Now..back to the UFO’s. Yes I believe in them..why? because I have seen one myself. However I still claim that perhaps not all, but many of those seen recently, fit perfectly the description of large Chinese Lanterns which I have also witnessed flying in a chevron formation as the wind took them. When released, they glow very brightly in the night sky..and are often mistaken for the typical ‘UFO’ appearances.
Firstly I’d like to thatnk the Shropshire Star for allowing my above rant, so he’s a little further one.
Sounds like this UFO thing has all gone religeous, so could I possibly act on whats been said religeously. Ok I may sound a bit sinical… But would a Vicar take his son or daughter to a Psychiatrist if they’re son or daughter sat at the breakfast table talking to an invisible friend? I have often wondered that one
Secondly to all the religeous radicals, freaks, believers and suicide bombers.. I would like you to try this simple test
( and do us ALL a favour )
Go to the highest point near your house and do a leap of faith.
You preach and brainwash people into thinking there’s this fantastic entity in the sky above, doing good and working miracles etc…. So what a great idea to PROVE your FAITH in the invisble man in the sky !
Don’t forget HE will save you, because he loves you !…. However when you land on the floor and become and instant ‘pavement pizza’ just remember that is GOD saving you !
When you land in a net held by 8 firemen, then that is humankind saving you. So WHO DO YOU REALLY WANNA BELIEVE IN? Grow up bible bashing fruitcakes, if you want to believe in something believe in each other, becuase the quicker we do that the better this world might become !
Best wishes
Sir James Berry
Of course there are UFO’s they are Flying Objects that are Unidentified.
As soon as they have been identified they cease to be a UFO.
The real question is, has extra terrestrial life visited earth. If so how would it get here? If Einstein’s Special Theory of relativity is correct that nothing can exceed the speed of light, then ET, in a Galaxy far far away has made a very time consuming journey to get here for a bit of a look without making contact.
That would be a bit like Captain Cook sailing past the coast of a south sea Island, watching the inhabitants standing on the beach in amazement and not dropping in to say hello, and claim the land for the Empire.
Or maybe Douglas Adams was right when Ford Prefect in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy said UFO’s where just rich kids buzzing backward planets for a laugh.
Sad fact is, in a near infinite universe there is a very high level of probability of other intelligent life existing (even amongst the Chavs in Telford) but that the distances between us are so great that communication is not possible.
The Aliens are coming.
I believe that they are attracted to Shropshire by the beauty of the countryside. Maybe they are planning a vacation on Earth and what better place to visit than our beloved county.
On the other hand if they were Alien spies then why would they show so many lights for people to see them.
We do have the theory of relativity which was developed by Einstein many many many many years ago.
However Physics has come on in leaps and bounds since Einsteins day.
Physics is now based upn quarks, and the string theory
Don’t ask me to explain it would take far too long.
But these new theories seem to appy that great distances can be covered by creating wormholes from Point A to Point B
For example say we were in Telford and wanted to travel to Manchester - if you could develop a wormhole to get from Telford to Manchester it would be similar to stepping through a door in your house
1 min in Telford, one min in Manchester.
It would take huge amounts of energy to do this which is one of the limitations we have.
However if another civilization has develop a way to harness huge amounts of energy it would be childs play for them to create a machine to travel from one point of the galaxy to the next,
May I remind you that before the 1940’s we did not have nuclear energy or nuclear power - once we make the next step from nuclear energy it may be possible for ourselves to harness enormous amounts of energy to create wormholes
Might not now be necessary to use that much energy or distance, Phil. Have you seen the latest astounding news from NASA re. the Phoenix lander on Mars? Not only have they discovered water on the planet, and today they have announced that the soil is no different than that ‘in your back yard’ therefore capable of growing food. More evidence that there was/is/will be life on Mars, perhaps? Certainly much food for thought ;o)
agree with water/soil on mars
and the “debunked” face on mars/pyramids it must all be evidence that life existed on Mars at one point and then vanished whether being wiped out or leaving on own accord.
Food for thought
Oh dear, Sir James, have we touched on a raw nerve? How defensive your reaction was! What a ridiculous diatribe and completely irrelevant to the original points made by Phil and I about the subjects ‘religion and war’. Who mentioned faith? Who mentioned God? How can nothing more than a discussion about those two subjects be considered ‘preaching or brainwashing’. I am curious to know why a simple debate should have incurred such a coarse and rude reaction? Anyway, why attack those who wish to believe in a philosophy which chooses love over war and peace over anger? I rest my case.
maybe they have heard that this country is allowing illegal aliens in and thought they would join the system
Hmm. Looking at the evidence it appears SOME of the sightings were not lanterns. This is what probably happened:
Objects of unknown origin entered UK airspace.
They were picked up on radar and marked as “unknown”.
People started seeing them.
The military released Chinese lanterns as a smoke screen to direct attention away from the real goings.
This happened in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997. The real crafts (and yes they were witnessed by 100s, probably 1000s). Then the military released flares to direct attention away from the real thing. And it works!
LOL..
Irish regt…i think he needs to take a bit more water with his tipple!.
Flashing lights..of all colours..think some of you need to see a doctor and soon..Illnesses often give you that sympton. Most common illness being…..”PINT A LIITUS”
i have never seen a ghost but i know they are true. i have never seena UFO but i believe they are true from so much evidence. they are curious, who isnt?
The Lizards are coming!!!!!
(though according to David Icke, they are already here!!!)
I think alot of people are getting distracted with irrelevant arguments. The point in hand is that many many people have seen these lights. Whether you choose to believe they are lanterns or UFOs - which I add does NOT necessarily mean ‘aliens’, just flying objects that cannot be 100% identified - it is up to the people who have seen it. Anyone who didn’t see them cannot say one way or the other what these lights were. I personally choose to believe that the majority of the British public are not raving lunatics, and are able to determine the difference between a flying bag and a craft. But that’s just my personal opinion. I find it all very interesting and look forward to seeing where this story goes!!
I do believe that the lettuce is a common cure for ufo sightings and effects of internal probeing. Maybe you should check the feeds to your news room and the happy chappies at Telford chav organistion.
I do believe that UFOS are shaped like fetus heads.
Good Bye earthlings.
