Accident victim is named by police

A motorcyclist who died after a collision on a north Shropshire road was today named by police.

Christopher David Burrell, 44, from Newcastle-under-Lyme died after his motorbike collided with a car on the A41 at Tern Hill near Market Drayton.

He died after the accident outside the Stormy Petrel pub shortly before 7.45pm on Thursday.

A post mortem was held yesterday and an inquest was due to be opened today at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court.

It is believed Mr Burrell was attending one of the weekly motorcycle rallies, which are held outside the Stormy Petrel pub every Thursday and attract hundreds of riders.

Floral tributes to Mr Burrell were left outside the pub the following day.

A second motorcyclist was injured minutes later, on the same stretch of road, when his bike collided with a car.

The driver of the vehicle in the second accident has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit to do so through drink or drugs and failing to stop at the scene. He has been released on police bail.

A police spokesman said: “Police are continuing to investigate the incident and have already spoken to a number of witnesses. They have renewed appeals for anyone who saw the crash, or the circumstances leading up to it to contact Market Drayton police station.

Anyone who saw the fatal accident can contact the station on 08457 444888.
