County rivals aim to net award

Shropshire’s leading football clubs, Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford United, will be doing battle this week . . . for a top business award.

They are among the finalists at this year’s Shropshire Business Awards, which will be handed out in an Oscars-style ceremony at Telford International Centre on Friday evening.

About 700 guests are expected at the black-tie event, at which Olympic medallist Roger Black is guest speaker.

Three Telford companies - The Dodd Group, Epson, and Telford College of Arts and Technology - are competing for the showpiece Company of the Year title, while 24 other firms from across the county are shortlisted for awards.

The football clubs are in the final of the Best Sport and Leisure Business category, alongside Adventure Rope Training of Albrighton, near Shrewsbury.

The Shropshire Business Awards are organised jointly by Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, and the Shropshire Star. Friday’s event will also see the winner of the Dragons’ Den-style competition Star Idea crowned.
