Bus firm to probe customer grumbles

A “thorough” investigation will be carried out by bus firm Arriva after customers complained to a review group about the quality and standard of its service in Shrewsbury.

Group chairman Councillor Dr Maxwell Winchester said Arriva confirmed plans for the investigation at a meeting on Friday.

And Councillor Winchester said £18,000 could also be spent by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council on the town’s bus station after it was described as a “disgrace” and a “dismal place” with “filthy” toilets.

The group was set up to review bus services, covering everything from cleanliness to punctuality.

As part of the review the bus station was criticised, as were Arriva buses, with residents describing them as “dirty”. Others said fares were too expensive.

Councillor Winchester said: “Customer comments were presented to Arriva and they have assured the group that a thorough investigation will be conducted where necessary.

“In particular, concerns about customer complaint responsiveness were taken on board by Arriva and potential solutions were discussed.”

He said borough council officers also told the group improvements would take place at the bus station, including two hourly cleans from Monday, in addition to longer term work.

Nobody from Arriva was available for comment.
