Results due back after E.coli tests

Parents of up to 50 young children who attend a Mid Wales nursery fighting an E.coli breakout are expecting their test results back on Monday.Children who attend Park Lane Day Nursery in Welshpool have been tested after health officials confirmed two youngsters who attend the nursery were battling the potentially fatal O157 strain of the bacteria.

The condition of the two children is still unknown and it is not yet known if the two cases are linked.

A spokeswoman for the National Public Health Service for Wales said the first samples for the children were now in and results could be expected on Monday.

She said: “We are still in the early stages, but the first stage of samples have been sent off, with the results expected in after the weekend.

“If anybody gives a positive sample they will be contacted by the doctor with advice.”

The spokeswoman added a further screening would be carried out on all of the children tomorrow.

“We have to do them 48 hours apart to see if the bacteria has had time to develop.”

Park Lane Nursery manager Julia Jones said: “We are co-operating with the relevant authorities and their investigation and we will listen to and react to advice given.”

Parents were told of the outbreak at a meeting held on Thursday at Welshpool Town Hall.

One parent, who declined to be named, said she was expecting the nursery to be reopened by Thursday.

She said: “I am very worried, but pleased action has been taken so quickly.”
