Pair face hearing on pony killings

A Shetland ponyTwo teenagers accused of shooting and killing two Shetland ponies in Whitchurch will have their case committed to crown court next month. The 13-year-old and 18-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, face charges of carrying loaded guns in a public place, and torturing and killing the ponies which were pets belonging to an elderly people’s residential care home.

Magistrates sitting at Shrewsbury yesterday adjourned the case until July 4 for committal papers to be prepared.

The younger youth will remain in local authority care and the older teenager was remanded in custody until the committal date.

The ponies, called Bill and Ben, had been kept in the paddock, owned by Edgeley House Nursing and Residential Home for about 14 years. They were pets of the residential home.

Their death shocked and upset Whitchurch residents.

A new pony, Beauty, has taken up residence in the paddock at Edgeley House after the elderly animal was given to the home as a gift.

Edgeley House manager Elizabeth Jones said: “Someone had been looking for somewhere for Beauty to retire to and heard about what had happened here.

“The residents love having her here and feeding her, that’s why it was so sad when we lost the other two.

“We are getting ready to have two more ponies here as well, that will be in the next few weeks.”
