A motorcyclist has been killed and another seriously injured after two accidents on the same stretch of a Shropshire road within an hour. The motorcyclist, believed to be in his 40s and from Staffordshire, died in a collision outside Clive Barracks, Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, just before 8pm yesterday. He was riding a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 which collided with a Hyundai Coupe.
The car driver was unhurt.
The accident happened near the Stormy Petrel Pub where hundreds of bikers regularly gather on a Thursday night.
The second motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a car on the A53/A41 roundabout at Tern Hill at about 8.45pm.
Sergeant Tony Merrick said: “About 300 people were present at the bike meet which was in progress at the Stormy Petrel when the fatal collision occurred.
“Anyone who saw any part of this incident who has not yet been seen by police, should get in touch.”
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We had a fatality on the roads at 7.50pm outside Tern Hill barracks.
“Sadly, nothing could be done to save the motorcyclist who was certified dead at the scene.”
Stormy Petrel pub manager Anne-Marie Stewart saw the accident happen.
“I was standing outside and he was coming down the street,” she said. “He must have been coming to us. I was the only one to see it, I wouldn’t let the others go out into the road after it happened.
“People were saying he does come in here quite often. Quite a few said he was a regular on a Thursday night.
“We had to close the pub up out of respect and to let the police get on with their work.”
In the second incident the injured motorcyclist, who was in his 40s, was taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital suffering back, leg, chest and abdominal injuries after his Honda ST1300 motorcycle collided with a Ford Mondeo travelling in the same direction.
The Mondeo driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit to do so through drink or drugs and failing to stop at the scene. He remains in custody today.
