Bridge is ours - after 229 years

The Iron Bridge at Ironbridge.Ownership of Shropshire’s world-famous Iron Bridge will be confirmed next week - after 229 years.

Mayor of Telford & Wrekin, Councillor Bob Groom, will be presented with the deeds for the bridge by Martin Kirkby of the Land Registry on Tuesday following the registration of the bridge in the council’s name.

The bridge, one of the most spectacular testaments to the Industrial Revolution, is the world’s first iron bridge and a World Heritage Site.

The official ownership of the Iron Bridge is now safeguarded by the State following the registration of the site by Telford & Wrekin Council.

The bridge was built by Abraham Darby across the River Severn in 1779.
