Concerned councillors in Powys travelled to London in a last-ditch attempt to secure the future of Wales’s only Royal British Legion (RBL) care home.
The 60-bed Crosfield House in Rhayader could close because of a forecast £500,000 deficit over the current financial year.
Legion officials have asked Powys County Council to pay 30 per cent more funding for each of its residents at the home, but the council says it cannot afford to meet the demands, leaving the home’s future in doubt.
Council chief executive Mark Kerr and board chairman Councillor Michael Jones met RBL trustees in London yesterday.
RBL director general Chris Simpkins said: “We had a constructive and helpful discussion.”
A petition of more than 2,000 names in protest at the possible closure was also handed over.
At a Powys County Council board meeting in Llandrindod Wells last week, campaigners turned out in force to protest against the home’s possible closure.
Rhayader mayor John Davies said: “The council is being used as a scapegoat and I think it’s absolutely disgusting.”
But an RBL spokesman said: “It is not true the Legion will close Crosfield and will use Powys council as a scapegoat. We have met with the council on a number of occasions and there has been a real effort to find a way forward.”
