Line-up for festival is unveiled

Organisers of Wellington’s 12th annual literary festival have unveiled their biggest line-up to date with big names including BBC newsreader George Alagiah, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin author Louis de Bernieres and football legend Ian Rush.Thousands of literary lovers are expected to flock to Wellington when the festival runs from October 4 to 30.

Festival chairman Gary Davies said they had a record-breaking 18 authors and figures from the book world signed up to take part in this year’s event.

Former Liverpool and Welsh international footballer Rush will be talking about his autobiography, while political commentator Simon Hoggart, who writes for The Guardian and previously presented The News Quiz on Radio 4, is also on the bill.

All the events are free to attend, with Wellington Town Council and sponsors, including the Shropshire Star, covering the £9,000 bill it costs to stage the festival. Mr Davies said: “We are really looking forward to yet another wonderful month of the literary festival in Wellington.

“We had 2,500 people attend last year’s festival and we are expecting even more this year.

“The line-up this year is absolutely great - a lot of the book publishers know about the festival now.”
