West Brom midfielder Kim Do-Heon has expressed his desire to play for South Korea in the Olympic Games as an over-age player.
That would mean the 25-year-old being unavailable for the build-up to the Baggies opening Barclays Premier League clash at Arsenal on August 16.
Under-23 sides compete at the Olympic football tournament but each country is allowed three over-age players and Kim, who took part in Athens four years ago, wants to be one of them in Beijing.
The departure of Zoltan Gera to Fulham and Filipe Teixeira’s cruciate knee setback meant Kim may have played a more significant role for Tony Mowbray’s side this term.
But that will be put into doubt for the initial part of the campaign if he gets his wish to represent his country in China.
Kim said: “I want to play at the Olympics. I enjoyed a great experience at the Athens games and it is a great opportunity. There would have to be discussions about Beijing with my club.”
