The future of a Mid Wales tax office which is currently under threat from closure, with the loss of 30 jobs, will be decided within the next few months, it has been revealed today.
Welshpool’s tax office in Severn Road, is one of 10 tax offices throughout Wales earmarked for closure under cuts proposed by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
Dave Morris, Welshpool representative for the Public & Commercial Services Union (PCS), said today: “We have been told that a decision could be made by August.”
He said a consultation period for the branch had already come to an end and hoped the outcome would be positive.
He added: “We know there is plenty of work for us to do here but that’s not the issue here, it’s the fact that HMRC want to cut the number of its buildings and the number of staff.
“All we can do now is wait for the decision.”
He said about 500 jobs in tax offices across Wales could be lost under the proposals, putting 1,200 jobs at risk.
Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, said the union would be campaigning to keep as many offices open as possible.
Montgomeryshire AM, Mick Bates said he would be doing all he could to save Welshpool branch.
“The jobs in Welshpool are worth £2 million to the local economy,” he said.
“The proposed closure of the Welshpool office would have a devastating impact on the lives of the people who work there, as well as their families,” he added.
