Paul Simpson today hailed the “whole-hearted” support he is receiving from the Shrewsbury Town hierarchy - and confirmed the club could dig into their coffers to pay transfer fees this summer. The two players the Town boss has brought in so far - Paul Murray and Stephen Hindmarch - were both out of contract and so available on free transfers.
But Simpson today hinted that he could also strengthen his hand by signing players still under contract at other clubs.
“There could be transfer fees paid this summer,” confirmed the Town boss.
“The chairman is desperate for the club to be successful. He is supporting me whole-heartedly at the moment so there could be fees paid and free transfers brought in.
“There are plenty of things going on. I have spoken to players and clubs in the last few days but these things take time and I hope people understand that.”
Former manager Gary Peters operated with considerable financial support when the window was last opened in January, with transfer fees paid out for Kevin McIntyre, Guy Madjo and the dual deal which brought Scott Bevan and James Constable from Kidderminster to Oteley Road.
One player Simpson wouldn’t be forced to pay a fee for is defender Graeme Lee, who was brought in by him on loan.
Lee has now been released from newly-promoted Championship club Doncaster Rovers - and Simpson has admitted he is keeping tabs on the 29-year-old stopper.
“He is one of a number of potential players we are considering this summer to be honest,” he added.
“I have spoken to Graeme but it wasn’t talks or anything like that.
“He is one of many players who interest me because I know what he can do for us and he is the type of character we want to bring into the club.
“I’m not saying we are definitely trying to sign him. He is one of a number of players available on the PFA lists who could interest us.”
