Judo pair set to clock up miles

Shropshire judo duo Kelly Edwards and Gemma Howell face a busy summer globe-trotting as their bid to be a part of the London 2012 Olympics gathers pace.

The teenagers will both fly to Japan at the end of the month for a two-week training camp with the Great Britain under-20 squad.

Before that Kelly will be at the British Olympic Centre in Austria while Gemma is put through her paces in Edinburgh.

The news comes as a particular boost to Adams Grammar School student Gemma, who has pulled out of two previous camps due to A-Level commitments.

The Newport student, who turns 18 later this month, will take a gap year after her exams to focus on judo.

The promising pair will be looking to impress in Japan with their focus on medals at the London Olympics in four years.

They may have been in contention for the Beijing games this time round, but age was against them.
