AFC Telford United defender Asa Charlton looks set to miss the first week of pre-season training - as he recovers from an injury which he sustained last August.
Charlton is a fortnight into his rehabilitation from a double hernia operation and fears he won’t have sufficiently recovered in time for the return to training with the rest of his team-mates later this month.
The player today revealed how the injury had forced him to play through the pain barrier throughout last season.
“The problem came in either the last pre-season game of the first league game and the doctor said straight away I needed a hernia operation,” said the 30-year-old ex-Mansfield man.
“He said I could get through for a couple of months so I aimed to play until Christmas and have it done then.
“But when I got to Christmas it wasn’t feeling too bad so I decided to carry on.
“Looking back, it definitely affected me in quite a big way. When I started warming-up or started the first or second half of matches it felt really sore and I hardly did any training because of it which takes it toll when the games are coming thick and fast.”
Charlton, however, is delighted he is now on the comeback trail.
“I had the operation about two weeks ago and I’ve already been down the gym a few times,” he added.
“It’s coming along well but I don’t think I will be ready for the start of pre-season - the first week or so might come a bit too quickly for me.”
