AFC Telford United’s Lee Vaughan has vowed to bring down the bookings in 2008-9 - but admitted: “I won’t change my game.”Vaughan, who has been named in the Blue Square North team of the year, collected 14 yellow cards last season, leaving walking him a disciplinary tightrope to avoid a third suspension at the end of the season.
The 21-year-old wing back is determined to bring that number down, but insists he will not lose the edge from his game.
“I know I have to be careful with my bookings and it’s something me and the gaffer (Rob Smith) have spoken about,” said Vaughan.
“I can’t change my game because I wouldn’t be half the player.
“I don’t think the gaffer would want me to stop being physical either but it’s about getting that fine line.”
Despite being the only Bucks player in the end-of-season representative team, Vaughan admitted he didn’t hit the same heights last season as in 2006-7.
“It’s brilliant news to be in the team but also a bit of a shock,” he added. “I didn’t have a bad season but when you compare it to the season before, I would say it was only steady so hopefully I can push on next season.
“It’s exciting times for everyone at the club and we are all looking forward to it.
“The manager strengthened which I felt personally we needed to do to try and push on and challenge again.
“It was a great achievement to be the runners-up but I felt we probably over-achieved a bit and were a bit lucky in a few games.
“But the manager has brought players in to take us to the next level.”
Director Dave Topping received a runners-up trophy and medals for the playing squad at Saturday’s league AGM in Blackpool.
Telford will learn tomorrow whether they will head to Boston and Halifax next season when the two financially-troubled clubs learn whether their appeal against expulsion from the Conference has been successful.
